Dengue: Facts and Myths

Due to the large scale dengue cases reported in the national Capital of India , New Delhi is on Medical alert for any new cases of Dengue reported. Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever is a mosquito borne tropical disease    caused by the dengue virus.Symptoms include fever,headache muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome

The prevention of dengue requires control or eradication of the mosquitoes carrying the virus that causes dengue.There is no vaccine but we can lower the chances by taking few precautionary measures.

Myth: Dengue is epidemic

Fact : Dengue is not epidemic and is in control , only 1 % of cases are life threatening.

Myth : Everbody suffering from Dengue should be hospitalized

Fact: Only patients with severe Dengue symptoms need hospitalization.

Myth: Testing platelet levels alone accounts for complete and effective management of dengue

Fact: A complete blood count (especially hematocrit) is needed to monitor prognosis and increased capillary permeability, which is the starting point of all complications. Falling platelet counts with rising hematocrit levels are most important.
